Beware the month of March for divorce

On Behalf of | Mar 30, 2018 | Family Law |

Did your marriage survive “March madness?” No, not the basketball tournament, although if your mate is a sports fanatic, this could be a challenge.

The above term is a reference to the spike in divorce filings during the month of March. Learn why this month may be make-or-break time for your marriage.

Why March is considered a prime time to file for divorce

Family law attorneys generally agree that they see in influx of divorce clients in the first quarter of the year, usually peaking around March. There can be a few different reasons for this.

For one, it’s after the major holidays have come and gone. If you and your spouse spent a tense Christmas and New Year’s sniping at one another, you may have decided to reevaluate the relationship.

Then, if Valentine’s Day came and went without a rekindling of your relationship, it just might be now that the two of you decide to throw in the towel on your relationship status.

Another factor could be that spring begins in March. As spring is the season of renewal and new beginnings, unhappy couples may not want to endure another year of marital strife together. They may decide that pulling the plug on their dead relationship is the best option available to them at this point in their lives.

Where to go from here?

Regardless of the series of unpleasant events that led you to this critical juncture, if you are contemplating a divorce, you need to lay some solid groundwork before filing. The best way to leave yourself in a good position to start anew is to learn all about your rights and responsibilities in divorce under the Kentucky state laws.
